An explorable explainer for the ‘natural asset company’ idea: measure what a landscape does (carbon, clean water, flood protection), price that output, split it into shares — and let the share price track ecological health instead of resale value.
The problem
The natural-asset-company idea is hard to grasp in the abstract and easy to oversell. The NYSE's own listing proposal was withdrawn in 2024 after regulatory pushback, yet the mechanic keeps resurfacing in private markets.
The approach
- A four-step scroll story (measure → price → split → heal) with a sticky 100-tile landscape that visibly recovers.
- A simulator where one health slider drives every number on the page from a single model — per-service values, capitalisation, share price and a live price curve.
- Non-linear service curves (e.g. flood protection only kicks in once the floodplain reconnects) so the price behaves like the ecology, not a straight line.
- A demo wallet with play-money lots to feel gains and losses as the land heals or degrades.
- A prominent “reality check”: securities law, independent audit, land rights & community consent, KYC/AML and custody — none of it done, and said so plainly.
The outcome
- Two iterations: Ciénega (a wetland explainer) evolved into Hollowmere, a more editorial, fully data-driven version.
- Fictional sites only — no real money, securities or land involved.
